DeadMau5 Chosen for MTV VMAs and DJ Hero 2
Good news for the Deadmau5 camp. Everyone’s favorite raving rodent has been selected to be the “house band” for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The superstar electronic music producer will play exclusive remixes of other artists—presumably those nominated for awards. The show will air live on Sunday, Sept. 12th.
Deadmau5 has also been elevated to the status of in-game character in the latest update to Activision’s DJ Hero franchise, smartly titled DJ Hero 2. Here’s a first look at the in-game character.

This past year has been huge for the man with the mau5head. He dropped his debut album, Random Album Title, has repeatedly demolished the club and festival scene, and has barraged the blogosphere with one hot track after the next. Needless to say, everything the Canadian DJ does is rarely short of epic. The name Deadmau5 has become synonymous with quality progressive house music, and we have learned to expect only the best from him.
But here is a step in a new direction for Joel Zimmerman. For Lack Of A Better Name, the follow-up to Random Album Title, is like no mau5 we are familiar with. While several of the tracks on For Lack Of A Better Name have already been leaked around the internet, the album itself takes on a whole new identity when these tracks are compiled into one continuous, and remarkably ambitious mix. Veteran Deadmau5 listeners will be quick to embrace the opening to the album, finding their fix in “Ghosts ‘n Stuff,” its sequel “Moar Ghosts ‘n Stuff,” and “Hi Friend,” all reminiscent of Zimmerman’s trademark sound. With the exception of these three tracks, the album represents what May very well be the new Deadmau5. Track five, “Bot,” features a super-grimy synth that literally vomits all over the track, paving the way for the album’s groovier, more melodic second half.
The tracks “Word Problems,” “Soma” and “The 16th Hour” showcase the mau5’s new style, a deeper, more mysterious brand of house music constructed primarily on low, rumbling basslines. And the closing track “Strobe” is an experience in itself, an epic club anthem.
Do not expect For Lack Of A Better Name to pick up where Random Album Title left off. Instead, embrace this change in sound and say “Hello” to Deadmau5 2.0.
